Ladakh literally means 'Land of the high passes'. It is a Buddhist kingdom with many of the oldest monasteries of tibetan buddhism.
Despite the arid landscapes of the Indus and its tributaries, every village and monastery appears as an oasis, as the villagers and monks organize their land into fertile terraces by channeling the flowing torrents of glacial water towards their land.
The most popular monasteries are :
On the East side of Leh : Shey, Thicksey, Stakna, Hemis and Takthok.
On the West side of Leh : Stok, Likir, Alchi and Lamayuru

Some beautiful and well preserved monasteries are not accessible by road. The advantage of visiting such monasteries is that they have better preserved their character far from the most tourist places.

If you want to visit the monasteries of Ladakh by road we recommend you to keep at least two days for that purpose. One day to visit the monasteries to the East of Leh and one day to visit the monasteries to the West of Leh. It will take a full day to visit Lamayuru from Leh.
You can also spend a night in the guesthouse of your preferred monastery to participate in the monastery life.
